Addition of sewage to a river adds nutrients which aid growth of algae which, when they die, are decomposed by aerobic bacteria leading to a reduction of oxygen levels in the water. The lack of oxygen kills fish, and makes little difference to populations of birds, but encourages certain detritivore animals, like theTubifex and blood "worms", that can live with very little oxygen.
